Brook End History

For some odd reason lost in time, Brook End has a strange house numbering scheme which extends to the houses beside the recreation ground.

Until the 1970s, the house on the corner at the recreation ground was the village butcher’s shop. Earlier, it was the village abattoir too, animals being killed in the shed at the back. Increasing regulation on human and animal health, and increasing ability to travel to town, eventually made it uneconomic. When the Creamer family bought the property in 2011, they found much of the old equipment still stored in the outbuildings. For a week or two, they re-erected the shop sign, and here it is: (click for a big version)Jarvis sign
